Linux Operating System

What is an Operating System

Without an operating system your personal computer or mobile device wouldn’t work. An operating system (OS) according to wikipedia is system software that manages computer hardwaresoftware resources, and provides common services for computer programs. You may have come across the most popular operating systems like Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.

What you might not know is that some other operating systems exist not so popular. Two of them worth mentioning are Chrome OS and Linux OS. Both of them are open source which means you don’t have to pay for downloading and installing them. Personally I’m a fan and user of Linux for about a decade.

The history of Linux

Linux is not owned by any company, as I have said it is open source. It is maintained and updated by software developer communities voluntarily across the world. The Linux Operating System was created in the early 1990s by a Finnish software engineer Linus Torvalds as a university project.

Unlike Microsoft Windows, linux has many distributions for different purposes. The most well known distribution is Ubuntu desktop which has a graphical interface and it’s latest version is Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. Android OS was also developed using the linux kernel.

Lightweight and secure

By default linux is a very lightweight operating system and can be installed in older PC’s running smoothly making your computer experience better. I believe that Puppy distribution is the most lightweight of all. Linux is also considered to be very secure, because of it’s lack in popularity many hackers prefer to attack other operating systems. I’m not saying that linux can’t get a computer virus but it is more difficult for linux to get infected by one.
